Faust gained national attention when he was hired as the head coach of the University of Notre Dame football team in 1981. He was known for his success as a high school coach, but struggled to translate that success to the college level. Faust coached at Notre Dame for five seasons, from 1981 to 1985, with a record of 30 wins, 26 losses, and 1 tie.
